14 July marked the third anniversary of the devastating flood disaster. Triggered by an extremely heavy rainfall event in western Germany, the floods claimed the lives of 135 people and destroyed numerous houses and infrastructures, leaving their mark on the lives of those affected to this day.
On the third anniversary, we commemorate the victims and those affected. It remains of central importance to continue to come to terms with the flood event and to learn from the past.
The German Committee for Disaster Reduction is working intensively on this issue and has already published two series of publications:
– The flood disaster in Germany in July 2021
– Governance and communication in the crisis of the flood event in July 2021
You can also find comprehensive information about heavy rain, floods and flooding on the topic pages on natural hazards or heavy rain, a newsletter on the flood disaster and regular news blogs.
The Aqua-X Net project with the ‘Water Extreme Events’ (WaX) funding programme and the flood platform offer up-to-date information and opportunities to exchange ideas on these topics.
The DKKV also offers a flood mailing list that provides a platform for researchers and interested parties to exchange information – not only on the 2021 flood disaster, but also on subsequent flood events in Germany.
All information on the activities of the DKKV in connection with the flood disaster and other projects can be found on the DKKV website.
