How can organizations make disaster risk reduction more inclusive, accessible and responsive to the needs and leadership of persons with disabilities?
Persons with disabilities are disproportionately affected before, during and after disasters, yet accessibility, inclusion and meaningful participation are still not sufficiently prioritized in many disaster risk reduction initiatives. Strengthening disability inclusion is therefore essential to ensuring that disaster preparedness and prevention efforts leave no one behind.
This online training event, organized by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), the Sendai Stakeholder Engagement Mechanism (SEM) and its Disability Stakeholder Group, together with the Thematic Group on Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Action, focuses on translating awareness into practical action. Through real-world examples and interactive discussions, participants will explore achievable ways to integrate disability inclusion into their organizations’ policies, programmes, partnerships and advocacy efforts.
The session will emphasize the leadership, expertise and meaningful participation of persons with disabilities and their representative organizations. It will also examine how stronger coordination, evidence-based advocacy and sustained investment in disability-led initiatives can contribute to more inclusive and effective disaster risk reduction at local, national, regional and global levels.
Participants will leave with practical steps they can begin implementing immediately, as well as a clearer understanding of how organizational action can support broader international efforts to protect persons with disabilities in disaster situations.
The event is aimed at civil society organizations, disaster risk reduction professionals, humanitarian practitioners, policymakers, advocates and other stakeholders committed to building more inclusive and resilient communities.
