On 25 February 2026, at 11:30 a.m. (CET), a new session of the DRR Stammtisch Lunchtalk Series will take place, focusing on innovative monitoring strategies and recent developments in avalanche and glacier research for disaster preparedness. This online event is hosted by the Disaster Competence Network Austria (DCNA); the general event series is organised by the DCNA, the Association française pour la prévention des catastrophes naturelles et technologiques (AFPCNT), the National Platform for Natural Hazards – PLANAT and the DKKV.
Against the backdrop of climate-driven changes such as rising temperatures, permafrost thaw, and glacier retreat, the Lunchtalk will explore how alpine hazard regimes are changing. It will address emerging extreme events that increasingly exceed historical experience, their implications for risk assessment and disaster management, and the need to adapt existing approaches to preparedness and response.
The discussion will further examine how scientific research, monitoring institutions, and public authorities can strengthen cooperation in order to translate new scientific insights into timely and effective decisions. With contributions from Andrea Fischer (Austrian Academy of Sciences, ÖAW) and Jan-Thomas Fischer (Austrian Research Centre for Forests, BFW), the Lunchtalk offers expert perspectives on current research and monitoring practices in the alpine context. The event is aimed at snow and avalanche scientists, emergency responders, mountain rescue organisations, and other professionals working in disaster risk reduction and preparedness.
The Lunchtalk will be held online via MS Teams. Prior registration is required to receive access details. You can register here. The complete flyer can be seen here.
