A new study examines 1,729 flood events in Europe between 1950 and 2020 and provides exciting insights into attribution research: it considers not only climatic influences, but also socio-economic factors such as population and economic growth.
The results show that increasing exposure – i.e. more people and assets in vulnerable areas – has had a major impact on damage, while improved prevention and risk management measures have reduced vulnerability.
Among others, Bruno Merz from the GFZ – an institutional member of the DKKV – and Heidi Kreibich, who is a personal member of the DKKV, are involved in the study.
