As disasters increasingly force people to leave their homes, disaster displacement is becoming a significant consequence of disaster risk. The roundtable “When Home Is Lost: From Prevention to Durable Solutions for Disaster Displacement” brings together policymakers, practitioners, researchers and other stakeholders to discuss how disaster risk reduction can help prevent displacement and support durable solutions when displacement cannot be avoided.
The event will explore practical approaches to reducing displacement risks, including risk-informed development, resilient housing and infrastructure, social protection, preparedness measures and anticipatory action. Participants will also discuss pathways towards durable solutions for people affected by disaster displacement, including recovery, reconstruction, livelihood restoration, planned relocation and community-led recovery.
Building on the outcomes of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction 2025, the roundtable will connect policy discussions with experiences from recent disaster contexts. Particular attention will be given to persistent challenges such as financing gaps, governance challenges and displacement in fragile and conflict-affected settings.
Rather than following a traditional panel format, the event will combine short field perspectives, rotating speakers and moderated dialogue. This approach aims to incorporate diverse voices, encourage audience engagement and strengthen the connection between policy, practice and the realities faced by people affected by disaster displacement.
The event is co-organized by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), the Sendai Stakeholder Engagement Mechanism (SEM), the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Platform on Disaster Displacement (PDD).
