The Asia-Pacific Mayors Academy was launched in 2019 by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) – in cooperation with the United Nations University, Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS); the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU), United Cities and Local Governments Asia-Pacific (UCLG ASPAC) and the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES).
After the successful conclusion of four cohorts, the fifth edition for 2024 is being launched.

The Academy engages newly elected or appointed city mayors/governors in the Asia-Pacific region to participate in an annual fellowship and build their capacities to develop and implement sustainable urban solutions in their communities, in support of the New Urban Agenda and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Generally, mayors/governors join the Academy in the first one-third of their term in office, although special circumstances may apply.  Interested mayors/governors elected since 2023 are strongly encouraged to apply.
This year, the Academy is scheduled to take place from April 2024 to October 2024. The Academy will deliver tailored activities to Mayors through both virtual and physical sessions coupled with ongoing peer-learning and builds a network of local leaders across the Asia-Pacific committed to sustainable urban development. The physical sessions will be a part of the programme at the 12th Session of the World Urban Forum, to be held from 4 to 8 November 2024 in Cairo, Egypt.

Deadline for application is 10th March 2024.
