In the second session of the DKKV Lunchtalk series, Prof. Dr.-Ing. James Daniell offers insights into nearly two decades of work analyzing and modeling the socio-economic impacts of natural disasters worldwide. Drawing on experience from research, industry, and international organizations (including CEDIM, the World Bank (GRADE), the University of Adelaide, and Risklayer) he illustrates how disaster analyses are conducted in the crucial first hours after an event. The talk highlights the different approaches taken by academia, government agencies, and the insurance industry, discussing their respective strengths and weaknesses, and explores how improved data, collaboration, and transparency can enhance the quality and speed of such assessments in the future.
