A new independent scientific advisory board of the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK), consisting of twelve renowned scientists, began its work on January 26. In future, the council will provide scientific support for the work of the BBK for four years and advise the office. BBK President Ralph Tiesler said: “With your expertise, you will help us to further develop civil protection at a high, scientifically sound level. I am therefore looking forward to your advice – especially on the question of how we can meet the current challenges in civil protection as efficiently as possible through the work of the BBK.”

The ceremonial opening was followed by the first meeting of the advisory board, at which Prof. Dr. Martin Voss from the FU Berlin and DKKV board member was elected as chairman of the advisory board.

Two annual meetings are intended on the one hand to present the state of research on new scientific findings and discuss their significance for the work of the BBK and on the other hand to enable a critical examination of the BBK’s performance of its tasks from a scientific perspective.

Some of the scientists represented on the advisory board are also DKKV members or part of the DKKV board:

Prof. Dr. Stefan Pickl (University of the Federal Armed Forces Munich)
Prof. Dr. Lars Gerhold (TU Braunschweig)
Prof. Dr. Alexander Fekete (THK)
Prof. Dr. Lothar Schrott (Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms University Bonn)
Prof. Dr. Martin Voss (KFS)
