A new short report has been published as part of the Forensic Disaster Analyses (FDA) conducted by the Centre for Disaster Management and Risk Reduction Technology (CEDIM) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT): ‘Heavy Rain in Central Europe (September 2025)’.

The report highlights the meteorological causes of the heavy rainfall event on 8 and 9 September 2025, when the peripheral low-pressure system ‘Walter II’ brought widespread rainfall of over 100 mm in a short period of time. The western Saarland, Rhineland-Palatinate, western North Rhine-Westphalia and neighbouring regions in Luxembourg, Belgium and Lorraine were particularly affected.

Despite the high rainfall, the overall impact was limited: there was localised flooding, flooded underpasses and flooded basements, but no major flooding events were recorded.

The full report is available on the CEDIM website.
