Today, May 8, is World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day – an international day of remembrance on the birthday of Henry Dunant, the founder of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. On this day, thanks are given to the more than 400,000 volunteers in Germany and the over 16 million volunteers worldwide for their tireless commitment and indispensable work.

This day is so important, because volunteer work is essential for the functioning of civil defense and disaster control. For the DKKV, this day is also of great relevance as the German Red Cross (DRK) is an institutional member of the DKKV. Health crises, disasters and armed conflicts are constantly increasing and becoming more complex, which is why civil protection is essential. World Red Cross Day thus underlines the importance of solidarity and humanitarian action in an increasingly challenging world.

Further information on the importance of the German Red Cross for civil protection and World Red Cross Day can be found on our topic page and on the German Red Cross website.
