The German Aerospace Centre (DLR) has systematically evaluated the surface temperatures of over 70 major German cities for the first time. The results show clear heat islands, especially in highly sealed, densely built-up urban areas, with temperature differences of up to ten degrees compared to the surrounding areas. Urban green spaces and water bodies, on the other hand, have a cooling effect and are crucial for adaptation to climate change. The analyses provide a data-based foundation for targeted heat protection measures and climate-resilient urban development.
