The German Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. Since its founding in 1950, the organization has been active in a wide range of civil protection and disaster relief areas – from small daily operations to flood relief and foreign aid to logistical tasks like during a pandemic. Around 88,000 volunteers are involved in the THW nationwide, with almost 1.2 million hours of service performed in 2024 alone.
Among the most memorable missions are the foreign missions following the 2004 tsunami in South Asia and the ongoing support for Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression. The flood operation in the Ahrtal in 2021 was the largest in THW history.
Until the anniversary on August 22, the THW press office will publish a weekly press release highlighting different aspects of 75 years of THW history.
