The Global Network of Civil Society Organisations for Disaster Reduction (GNDR) yesterday unveiled a new strategic roadmap to strengthen local early warning systems. The aim is to tailor early warning and preparedness measures more closely to the needs of vulnerable communities and to involve local stakeholders and civil society more closely in planning and implementation. The roadmap was developed in collaboration with organisations from 88 countries and draws on the expertise of over 400 experts.

The initiative supports the global goal of better protecting people worldwide from natural hazards and the consequences of climate change. The focus is on inclusive, risk-based and community-oriented early warning systems designed to reach particularly vulnerable population groups and enable early action. The roadmap defines key areas for action and priorities up to 2030 and is intended to serve as a guide for policy-making, practice and international cooperation.
