Super Typhoon Ragasa caused severe damage in several countries in East and Southeast Asia. At least 27 people were killed, and many more were injured or are missing.
The storm first hit the Philippines, where at least ten people, including several fishermen, were killed. A total of around 190,000 residents were affected there [1, 2, 3].
The storm then hit Taiwan particularly hard, where an overflowing dam caused flooding in several villages. In the village of Guangfu, 17 elderly people lost their lives [1]. More than 30 people were injured, while the number of missing persons has since fallen to below 20 [1, 2]. The government sent around 5,000 soldiers and over 100 military vehicles to the affected regions to provide support [1].
Ragasa finally reached southern China with the second-highest typhoon category. In the coastal province of Guangdong, more than a million people were brought to safety, schools were closed and local transport was suspended [1, 2]. Masses of water pushed into several coastal towns and flooded the streets there. Public life in Hong Kong also came to a virtual standstill: hundreds of flights were cancelled, numerous trees fell and injured people had to be treated in hospitals [1, 2].
The typhoon, which will have weakened somewhat by then, is expected to reach northern Vietnam on Friday night. The authorities there are expecting heavy rain and flooding [1].
