The “GAR Special Report 2024 – Disasters Forensics: Learning from the Past for a More Resilient Future,” organized by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), aims to enhance global resilience against extreme weather events by analyzing recent disasters for insights. The report focuses on ten recent catastrophic events, including Cyclone Freddy and Hurricane Beryl, which caused unprecedented destruction and loss of life, emphasizing the growing impact of climate change. Using forensic disaster analysis, the report seeks to understand these events’ specific characteristics and disaster “DNA” to improve disaster risk reduction strategies. By identifying underlying causes and risk drivers, the report provides policy recommendations and evidence-based strategies to integrate disaster risk reduction into development planning.
The launch event will be held online on 18th September 2024 at 15:00 Geneva time, featuring contributions from Mr. Kamal Kishore and an expert panel, followed by a Q&A session.
