In the run-up to the 2025 federal elections, the umbrella organisation of development and humanitarian non-governmental organisations in Germany (VENRO) has published its position paper ‘Taking responsibility for a fairer world’.
In it, more than 140 non-governmental organisations formulate key demands for a fair and sustainable development policy and for the strengthening of humanitarian aid. The position paper poses the question of how the policies of the next German government must be aligned in order to successfully and sustainably tackle global challenges such as climate change, the fight against poverty and hunger, ongoing conflicts and growing social inequalities.
The organisations emphasise the key role of development policy and humanitarian aid in tackling these global problems and stress that Germany has a historical and ethical responsibility to stand up for human rights and to overcome poverty and inequality. VENRO calls for a policy that not only takes national interests into account, but also assumes global responsibility and takes concrete measures for a fairer and more sustainable future. The civil society perspective should provide important impetus for policy-making.
