The United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) has released its latest report Turning Over a New Leaf. This edition of the Interconnected Disaster Risks series not only asks what needs to change, but more importantly how true, transformative change can happen. Building on previous findings, the report identifies five essential steps for transformation: Rethink waste, Realign with nature, Reconsider responsibility, Reimagine the future, and Redefine value.

The report makes one thing clear: despite clear scientific understanding, we are still falling short of real progress. It explores why well-intentioned actions like recycling often don’t go far enough – and how the so-called Theory of Deep Change can help us address the root causes of our behavior. Rather than merely treating symptoms, we must shift the underlying assumptions, structures, and goals that shape our societies – from the individual to the systemic level.
