In a new brochure published in February 2025, the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) warns against Solar Radiation Modification (SRM) as a supposed solution to the climate crisis. SRM includes various technological approaches to reduce solar radiation, for example by using aerosols in the stratosphere or brightening clouds. According to the UBA, these interventions are associated with high, almost incalculable risks that could cause global weather changes, ecological damage and geopolitical conflicts. In addition, they would not achieve a uniform cooling effect and could undermine climate protection efforts. The UBA emphasizes that effective climate protection can only be achieved by reducing greenhouse gas emissions – SRM is not an alternative.
