Over the past eleven years, the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) has handed over more than 250 vehicles to the Tunisian civil defence and disaster control authority ‘Office National de la Protection Civile’ (ONPC). The cooperation began over a decade ago with the aim of establishing volunteer structures in Tunisian civil protection. The vehicles, which mainly come from local THW organisations, are used in Tunisia for operations such as accident rescue, fighting forest fires and floods.
The last convoy of 16 vehicles departed from Rosenheim last weekend and was transported to Tunis via Genoa. A total of 21 such transports took place, involving around 300 THW volunteers. The project, which is funded by the Federal Foreign Office, strengthens civil society participation and civil protection in Tunisia.
