For many years, the German Weather Service (DWD) has made an important contribution to international climate monitoring and operates several data centres that provide detailed information on changes in the climate system and practical applications. The focus here is on the Centre for Climatological Analysis of Satellite Data (CM SAF) and the World Centre for Precipitation Climatology (WZN), which have been in existence for 25 and 35 years respectively. These centres provide important data on global precipitation measurements, climate trends and meteorological phenomena such as El Niño. The DWD is also involved in analysing international weather and radiosonde stations.
Water resources also play a central role: the Global Runoff Data Centre (GRDC), the International Soil Moisture Network (ISMN) and the UNEP GEMS/Water Data Center (GWDC) monitor river runoff, soil moisture and water quality. These institutions contribute significantly to the global monitoring of the atmospheric and terrestrial water cycle. The DWD Climate Conference 2024 will focus on Germany’s contributions to international climate observation, with participation free of charge and possible both on site and online.
