In Vietnam, Typhoon Kajiki caused flooding and landslides with heavy rain and strong gusts. The tropical storm reached the country on Monday afternoon (local time) with wind speeds of up to 133 kilometres per hour [1].
Around 300,000 people in coastal regions had been advised in advance to seek safety. In addition, several coastal provinces, including Thanh Hoa and Da Nang, implemented emergency measures, suspended shipping traffic and cancelled flights. Schools and other public buildings served as shelters. Over 16,500 emergency personnel and 100,000 helpers were on standby for rescue operations [1, 2, 3].
According to current information, at least three people died and ten others were injured [3]. Over 6,000 houses were damaged and around 18,000 trees were uprooted. Around 330 electricity pylons were knocked down, leaving more than 1.3 million households across the country without power. The capital Hanoi also experienced severe flooding as a result of the rainfall [2, 3].
The storm had previously already caused devastation on the Chinese island of Hainan, where more than 100,000 people were affected [4].
Kajiki has meanwhile weakened to a tropical low-pressure system over Laos. However, the authorities continue to warn of possible flash floods and landslides [2].
