The second day of the DRD24 confernece, held at the Austrian National Library, featured a series of insightful panels and keynotes focused on disaster risk reduction (DRR) and resilience. The day commenced with a short film about CERIS and a keynote by Oliver Seiffarth from the European Commission DG HOME, titled “CERIS – Connecting to Secure Europe’s Future.” This set the stage for discussions on the role of the European Commission and member states in programming European security research.
The first panel, moderated by Jeannette Klonk from the Austrian Research and Promotion Agency, included speakers like Giannis Skiadaresis from the European Commission DG HOME and Matthias Reiter-Pazmandy from the Federal Ministry of Science Research and Education Austria. They discussed the collaborative efforts required to enhance European security research.
The second panel, moderated by Łukasz Szklarski from ITTI, featured experts such as Simon Bittner from Johanniter and Harald Lernbeiß from Joanneum Research. The focus was on innovative approaches to protect against chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) risks.
The third panel, moderated by Barbara Juen from the University of Innsbruck, included Rosa Tamborrino from the Polytechnic University of Turin and Bernhard Bürger from the Austrian Institute of Technology. Discussions centered on empowering communities to build resilient futures through unity and collaboration.
The fourth panel, moderated by Stefan Rass from the University of Linz, featured Tiina Ristmäe from the DKKV member German Federal Agency for Technical Relief and Nadejda Komendantova from the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis. The panel explored how technological advancements can enhance the capabilities of first responders.
The fifth panel, moderated by Thomas Hartung from the University of the Bundeswehr Munich, included Urbano Fra Paleo from the University of Extremadura and Matias Barberis from the European Future Innovation System Centre. The discussion focused on using foresight to shape resilient futures.
The day concluded with a wrap-up session and a walking dinner, providing participants with opportunities to network and discuss the day’s insights.
