The German Weather Service (DWD), GeoSphere Austria, and the Swiss Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology MeteoSwiss report an unusually warm summer in the Alps in 2024, with record temperatures that even surpassed those of the heatwave summer of 2003. August, in particular, was characterized by low nighttime cooling. The summer was also very wet, especially in May, June, September, and October, with some extreme rainfall events, such as in St. Pölten. As a result of these heavy rains, the snow line dropped to low altitudes in mid-September, leading to record snowfalls. In addition, there was a record of 66 frost-free days on the Zugspitze and at Sonnblick.
