The German government’s key issues paper on the Carbon Management Strategy and a legislative proposal to amend the Carbon Dioxide Storage Act have once again brought carbon capture and storage (CCS) into the political spotlight. Three scientists from the DKKV member Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research (UFZ) classify these initiatives in terms of climate and energy policy.
In order to successfully develop the carbon management strategy, environmental lawyer Dr. Till Markus, sociologist Dr. Danny Otto and bioenergy expert Prof. Daniela Thrän recommend setting clear targets and linking CCS with the negative emissions strategy. In addition to involving the public, the sustainable provision of biomass and a rethink of how CCS is embedded in energy policy and legislation are also important. You can read more about this here.
