In 2024, natural hazards caused damage of around US$ 320 billion worldwide, of which around US$ 140 billion was insured. Tropical cyclones were particularly costly events, with hurricanes Helene and Milton being the main causes of damage in the USA. In total, these storms led to losses of US$ 173 billion. Non-peak perils such as floods and fires also contributed significantly, with losses of US$ 136 billion. In Europe, extreme flooding in Spain caused the most severe damage, with the Valencia region alone suffering US$ 11 billion in losses. In Germany, neighboring countries and Central and Eastern Europe, floods in June and September also caused losses in excess of US$ 9 billion.
