The KAHR synthesis and networking conference took place in Wesseling on 26 November. The KAHR project stands for Climate Adaptation Flood Resilience and accompanied the (re)construction process in the aftermath of the 2021 flood disaster in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate for three years. The project not only made a scientific contribution to flood risk management, but also actively supported the reconstruction process through various products and initiatives to make affected regions more resilient. In addition to project participants and the BMBF, many other stakeholders and organisations such as municipalities, districts, fire brigades and other authorities were present at the event. The DKKV was also represented. After a welcome from the KAHR speakers, selected products from the project were presented. These included, for example, 10 recommendations on reconstruction from a scientific perspective, various practical guidelines and handouts, numerous information and educational events, simulation games and numerous other KAHR products for regions. This was followed by discussions and detailed presentations of similar projects as well as the processing of thematically relevant questions in smaller working groups. The event concluded with a panel discussion on ‘Open research questions in the field of climate and flood resilient developments in the context of extreme events’ with State Secretary Dr Erwin Manz from the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of the Environment and Mathias Börger from the North Rhine-Westphalia Ministry of the Environment, among others. In order to record the results of the project and the event, the publication of reports on the results and even a specialised book was announced.
The DKKV would like to thank the KAHR organisation-team for the invitation and the interesting impulses!
