Munich Re, the world´s largest reinsurer, has released its global disaster loss calculation for 2023, coming to the conclusion of a total of US $250 billion. This amount of money roughly equals the entire GDP of Portugal or New Zealand.
The main findings of the report:
- Overall losses from natural events in 2023: US §250 billion (more than 74,000 fatalities).
- Earthquakes in Turkey and Syria was the year´s most devastating humanitarian crisis.
- Thunderstorms in North America and Europe more destructive than ever before: overall losses of US $76 billion; insured losses US $58 billion.
- 2023 was the hottest year ever, with a large number of regional records broken
