On January 1, 2025, the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam – GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences changed its name to GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences. The Research Institute for Sustainability (RIFS) now also bears the name “RIFS Research Institute for Sustainability at GFZ”. The new name simplifies the previous structure, but retains “GFZ” as the word mark under which it has worldwide recognition as a leading center for georesearch.
The GFZ pursues the vision of preserving the Earth as a life-friendly planet and has set itself new scientific priorities, including research into natural hazards, the water balance and geoenergy. A highlight in 2025 will be the expansion of research infrastructures such as SAFAtor for ocean monitoring and the continued operation of the satellite laser radar station on Telegrafenberg.
In addition to scientific projects, the GFZ will continue to promote exchange with society, for example through events such as the Potsdam Science Day and a geothermal exhibition on the ship MS Wissenschaft.
