The Federal Office for Agriculture and Food (BLE) published the forest fire statistics for the year 2022 on Tuesday, according to which about 3058 hectares of forest area have been destroyed by 2397 fires. According to the BLE, this is roughly equivalent to the area of the island of Borkum and is the second largest loss of forest area due to fires since records began in 1977. About 1900 hectares separate 2022 from the highest value in 1992.

Heat waves and very dry conditions (DWD) favored the development and rapid spread of numerous fires. Other vegetation fires are not included in these statistics.
