The new European State of the Climate Report 2024 (ESOTC 2024) has just been released, offering a comprehensive overview of last year’s climate developments across Europe. The report is published annually by the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) in collaboration with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). It marks the second joint publication by these two institutions, combining their expertise in global climate monitoring and weather analysis.

The ESOTC is part of a broader C3S portfolio of climate monitoring products. In addition to the annual report, this includes the Global Climate Highlights, monthly Climate Bulletins, and a range of long-term climate data and indicators. While the ESOTC focuses primarily on Europe, it also takes into account developments in the Arctic and at the global scale. The report aims to provide well-founded information on climate events, long-term trends, and their impacts – presented in a way that is accessible to both experts and a wider, non-specialist audience.

The 2024 edition highlights key developments such as record-breaking temperatures, extreme weather events, glacier melt, and rising sea surface temperatures. This year, a special emphasis is placed on the resilience of the built environment to climate extremes, as well as related policy responses. The report also offers insights into long-term climate trends through core climate variables.

The report is available both as an interactive web version featuring a wide range of visual resources and as a complete downloadable PDF here.
