The Commission of Experts for Research and Innovation (EFI) recently published its annual report on research, innovation and technological performance in Germany in 2025. It is aimed at the outgoing Federal Government in order to provide impulses for the upcoming coalition negotiations. The report focuses in particular on the urgent challenges for German research and innovation (R&I) policy in order to find a way out of the economic recession and ensure Germany’s competitiveness in international technology competition.
A particular focus of the report is on the topic of water management. In view of climate change and increasing regional water shortages, the need to develop innovative solutions for a sustainable water supply is emphasized. The expert commission recommends measures such as testing innovative concepts in real laboratories and setting up a comprehensive water register in order to effectively address water shortages and adapt the water infrastructure to more extreme weather conditions.
