On December 11, 2024, the DKKV Lunchtalk on the topic “COP29 experience reports” took place. Prof. Dr. Reimund Schwarze and Dr. Friedrich Bohn, who were in Baku as DKKV observers, and Tabea Klör (YP), who took part via online access, presented their impressions of COP29.

Prof. Dr. Reimund Schwarze found COP29 to be a challenging negotiation task, characterized by the absence of some high-level politicians and an uneven distribution of dissatisfaction. Nevertheless, it was decided to introduce carbon markets, which is seen as an important step. The influence of the oil industry was not overly influential, and the exclusion of oil countries from future COP conferences would contradict the basic principle of the United Nations.

Dr. Friedrich Bohn spoke primarily about the results of the debates on the global carbon market. In his view, the UN-supported mechanism for linking carbon markets worldwide promotes the transfer of money to the global South, but could be exclusive and difficult to access for poor countries due to untested standards and resource-intensive processes.

Tabea Klör assessed the online participation rather negatively as not all events could be attended and the technology on site was not good enough to follow the events properly.

The DKKV would like to thank Prof. Dr. Reimund Schwarze, Dr. Friedrich Bohn and Tabea Klör as well as all participants.
