This coming Thursday, October 1, 2026, from 13:00 to 14:30 CEST, the Disaster Competence Network Austria (DCNA) is hosting an online talk focusing on the integration of animals into disaster risk management.
Extreme weather events such as heatwaves and floods continually demonstrate that pets, livestock, and wildlife are often overlooked in traditional emergency preparedness and evacuation plans. This webinar explores how adopting a “multi-species mindset” contributes to more comprehensive and resilient disaster management strategies. Key topics include operational challenges during evacuation, legal frameworks, and ethical questions regarding animal loss and compensation.
Featured speakers include Assoc. Prof. Amélie Desvars-Larrive (University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna), Prof. Dr. Ruth Kutalek and Dr. Lucia Mair (both Medical University of Vienna), as well as Jackson Zee (FOUR PAWS International). The free online event will take place via MS Teams and welcomes practitioners, researchers, civil protection authorities, and interested members of the public.
