At the 8th Integrated Disaster Risk Management (IDRIM) Online Lecture Series on 26.05.2025 at 1 pm, Prof. van Westen, Professor of Multi-Hazard Risk Dynamics at the University of Twente (Netherlands) will give an insight into his publication “Multi-Hazard Risk Dynamics”.
Prof. van Westen has been researching the analysis and management of natural hazards for many years using remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS) and the development of freely accessible software solutions. His research focuses on the development of innovative methods for the assessment of dynamic multi-hazard risks and their changes under the influence of climate change, land use change and social vulnerability. He is also currently coordinating the EU project PARATUS, which is developing tools for assessing dynamic, interlinked risks.
The publication focuses on the complex multi-hazard events that can be caused by the interaction of different hazards and can intensify the damage. It examines how these events, which can have both different and identical causes, complicate risk assessment. It also highlights the importance of considering the interactions between hazards and factors such as exposure, vulnerability and capacity in order to develop effective risk reduction strategies.
