The heat warning system of the German Meteorological Service (DWD) is a well-known means of knowing when the heat is posing a danger to health. For today, for example, the Black Forest region is under a warning for extreme heat stress and the entire southwest of Germany is expecting severe heat stress.

However, apart from heat, other circumstances can also lead to health risks. Therefore, in addition to the heat warning system, the DWD maintains a thermal hazard index (as in the picture), which is based on the perceived temperature, a hazard index for UV radiation, which represents the expected maximum sunburn-effective UV radiation on a day, as well as the hazard index for weather sensitive persons, which is the risk to the human organism in case of specific medical pre-conditions (cardiovascular diseases, rheumatic diseases, respiratory diseases, general impairment of well-being).

More information on the topic of heat is provided on our topic page.
