From July 2 to 4, 2026, the conference “Five Years After the 2021 Flood—Changing Research Perspectives” took place on the Remagen campus. Together with numerous partner institutions from academia, the professional sector, and disaster preparedness, participants reflected on the lessons learned from the 2021 flood disaster and presented perspectives for a more resilient future.
The conference focused on current research findings and the exchange of ideas among academia, government, and the professional community. Through presentations, workshops, and panel discussions, topics such as extreme events and risk assessment, reconstruction and transformation, social resilience, civil protection, intermunicipal flood protection cooperation, and international experiences—including those from the Ahr Valley and Valencia—were addressed.
A particular highlight was the panel discussion “Build Back Better & Resilient Recovery – Approaches for Practical Implementation,” during which experts discussed sustainable strategies for reconstruction and strengthening resilience.
