MYrisk
The MYrisk project deals with multiple risks management of extreme events in fast growing (mega) cities in Myanmar. The project focuses on prevention and preparedness of multiple disaster risks, a comprehensive sensitisation as well as an integrated multiple disaster risk management (IMDRM). The main emphasis of MYrisk is on three natural hazards: earthquakes, tropical cyclones and floods.
MYrisk is part of the FONA Strategy – Research for Sustainability and the funding priority Sustainable Development of Urban Regions – SURE of the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR).
The project is currently in the last of four phases. In the preparatory phase (1st phase), literature research, workshops, field research and interviews were used to investigate the situation in the project region and to identify gaps in knowledge and data. In the definition phase (2nd phase), multiple risks in Yangon were examined in more detail. For this purpose, a database with resilient research data was created for the exchange of information between the participating institutions. Furthermore, various education and awareness programmes as well as prevention programmes in case of disaster events were designed. In the research and development phase (3rd phase), MYrisk focused on strengthening institutional preparedness for disaster risk reduction and evaluating public awareness programs. The project advanced DRR awareness rising for system-relevant public and private services and developed spatial data analyses, risk maps, and evacuation tools. Additional efforts included preparedness activities for MSMEs, schools, universities, and civil society to enhance resilience across multiple sectors.
In the implementation phase (4rd phase), MYrisk is applying the integrated multiple disaster risk management approach. Over the next two years, the project will develop a metadata inventory of existing data stocks and strengthen disaster risk-informed planning and decision-making in the public sector. It will promote inclusive, socio-culturally sensitive risk prevention within civil society, support system-relevant micro, small, and medium enterprises in the private sector, and advance integrated education, research, and capacity enhancement programs in academia, complemented by comprehensive communication and dissemination activities.
DKKV is actively involved all project activities, focusing on the topics of risk communication material, education material for disaster prevention and preparedness, new media in DRR, lessons learned and best practises as well as publications and dissemination of project results.
