With the founding of the DLR Institute of Space Research on May 1, 2025 in Berlin-Adlershof, the German Aerospace Center, which is an institutional member of DKKV, is pooling its expertise in planetary research and optical sensor systems. The institute develops innovative instruments for space travel, earth observation and security research and cooperates closely with international partners such as ESA and NASA. In addition to key contributions to climate research and planetary science, the institute also strengthens civil protection: optical sensors provide important geodata for situational awareness and support in the event of disasters and crises. In this way, the new institute not only contributes to space exploration, but also to safety on Earth in a very concrete way. The close cooperation with authorities and organizations enables a practical technology transfer in crisis situations.
