The number and intensity of heatwaves in cities is increasing worldwide – with sometimes dramatic consequences for health, infrastructure and the environment. In order to better prepare cities for this growing challenge, the UN initiative Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR2030) has now published a comprehensive “Urban Heat Risk Management Resource Package”.
The package provides cities and municipalities with practical tools, strategies and case studies to systematically analyze heat risks and develop effective countermeasures. It is aimed at decision-makers, planning authorities, civil protection and health services alike.
Key topics include heat warning systems, emergency plans for extreme heat days, greening measures, heat-resilient urban planning and the involvement of citizens and vulnerable groups. The package is supplemented by international best practices and scientific principles.
With this offering, MCR2030 aims to encourage and enable cities around the world to tackle the issue of heat protection in a strategic and integrated manner. After all, heat will become an ever greater problem in the future, especially in urban regions.
