Air quality measures in Germany have shown early success: In 2024, the entire set of limits in the European Air Quality Directive was met for the first time. Fine particulate matter levels have remained below the standards for the seventh consecutive year, and the annual mean limit for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) of 40 µg/m³ was also met at all monitoring stations – this is confirmed by preliminary evaluations of around 600 monitoring stations by the Federal Environmental Agency and the federal states (as of 03.02.2025).
However, it is important to note that the current limits are over 20 years old and no longer align with the latest scientific findings on the health impacts of air pollution. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends significantly stricter guidelines for health protection, making further emission reductions necessary to meet future, stricter limits.
