The National Interdisciplinary Climate Risk Assessment NiKE examines the significant impacts of climate change, with a particular focus on Germany, the European Union and global geopolitics. The analysis shows how the climate crisis is increasingly threatening security in Germany and Europe and what consequences this development entails.
In Germany, extreme weather events such as heatwaves, floods and forest fires are no longer just isolated incidents, but are becoming increasingly frequent challenges for civil protection organizations. This leads to increasing economic and health burdens.
For the European Union, southern European countries in particular are affected by the effects of climate change, with serious consequences for agriculture and tourism. These developments could lead to economic instability and health crises in the region.
The climate crisis is also exacerbating geopolitical tensions at a global level. Access to raw materials and resource-rich areas such as the Arctic is becoming increasingly contested.
