Land plays an important role in global greenhouse gas cycles. Land use activities can lead to the emission of such greenhouse gases into the atmosphere or to the removal of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change recognises that land use can make a significant contribution to mitigating climate change, including through the promotion of sustainable management of forests and oceans and other terrestrial, coastal and marine ecosystems.
