New approaches to disaster prevention were discussed at an event organised by the German Weather Service (DWD). DKKV board member Dr Stephanie Hänsel reported on the DWD’s projects. For example, DWD is working on new systems to better manage extreme weather events such as the 2021 flood disaster in the Ahr valley. Plans include the natural hazard portal for comprehensive information and the optimised warning system RainBoW, which should enable more individual and comprehensible warnings.

District Administrator Cornelia Weigand emphasised the importance of small-scale analyses and close cooperation between weather and disaster protection. The DWD considers it crucial to network prevention, warning and information in order to be prepared for more frequent extreme weather events in the future.
