On 12 November 2024, the workshop ‘Social media – How can crisis communication succeed in the event of extreme flooding?’ was held in Lahnstein by the Hochwassernotgemeinschaft Rhein e.V. (Rhine Flood Emergency Association). Among the participants were representatives of the municipalities, the rescue services, the Cologne and Düsseldorf municipal drainage companies and the DKKV was also represented. The workshop consisted of three keynote speeches on best practices, newly developed apps and data analysis of social media in the first part, as well as exciting discussions and a word café in the second part. The main focus was on the questions of how social media can be used to inform the population, how social media can serve as an additional way to expand situation information and how the involvement of citizens in flood management can be coordinated through social media.

The DKKV would like to thank for the invitation and the organisation of the workshop!
