The new Natural Hazards Report from the German Insurance Association (GDV) emphasises the need for bold climate adaptation measures, especially when dealing with water. It describes nationwide prevention strategies for local authorities, businesses and private individuals and analyses water-sensitive infrastructure such as dyke systems and blue-green urban design, e.g. in Leipzig. Using examples from the Moselle and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, approaches for flood control and water management in dry regions are presented. An interactive data service with graphics, tables and a new visualisation of natural hazard insurance density completes the report. In addition, the insurers’ climate workshop is presented, which deepens knowledge about natural hazards with projects such as flash flood modelling. The report is in favour of joint risk sharing between insurers and the state in the event of extreme natural disasters.
