The COP29 Climate Change Conference, which will take place in Azerbaijan from 11 to 22 November 2024, will be marked by increasing climate-related disasters. A key goal of the conference is to agree on a new global target for international climate finance. Recommendations for COP29 were published by VENRO and the Climate Alliance Germany in a paper entitled ‘Climate justice needs sustainable financing – demands for the 29th World Climate Conference in Baku’. The German government should advocate for a needs-based financing target to support those affected in the Global South. The switch from fossil fuels to renewable energies agreed at the 2023 climate conference in Dubai must be implemented swiftly and fairly in order to achieve the Paris climate targets. It is also important to ensure the full participation of civil society and to make the voices of the most vulnerable heard.
